Tom White is a social science researcher with the University of Otago, New Zealand, and teaches in Otago's Religion Programme. Tom succesfully defended his doctoral thesis at Otago in 2019, titled 'Contronymic secularism: the constitutional politics of religion in Fiji.' The thesis provides a mixed methods analysis of the history and politics of religious competition in Fiji, with a specific focus on the declaration of Fiji as a 'secular state' in the 2013 Constitution. Prior to his doctoral studies, White worked for four years as a social science lecturer at the Fiji National University (2012-2015) in Suva. Tom has a Masters from Durham University in Religion and Society (2011), and a Masters from Edinburgh University in Philosophy and Politics (2006).
